How to Use Kling 4.0: Getting Started Guide

Quick start: how to use Kling 4.0 in six steps
- Open the generator. Go to the AI video generator. You can draft a prompt and attach files without an account, but the button reads Sign in until you log in. Accounts are free to create.
- Describe the shot. Write what the camera should show: the subject, what it does, where it is and how it's filmed. Every run needs a prompt, even when you attach files.
- Add references (optional). Click Add reference (or +) to attach an image, video clip or audio file, one file at a time. Each file gets a numbered tag by type, in upload order: @image1, @image2, @video1, @audio1. Type @ or click the @ button to insert a tag; in the prompt it appears as a chip such as "Image 1."
- Set the format. Click the button under the prompt box that shows your current ratio, length and resolution, then choose an aspect ratio (16:9, 21:9, 9:16, 1:1, 4:3 or 3:4), a video length and a resolution. The model menu beside it shows Kling 4.0.
- Check the cost, then generate. The cost appears as ✦ plus a number just left of the generate button (the button with a sparkle icon). It updates as you change length or resolution, and credits leave your balance when the task starts.
- Collect the video. The finished clip plays in the generator with Download and Share buttons; Share opens your device's share menu or copies the link. A copy also lands in My Videos.
An example prompt for step 2:
A potter raises a tall vase on a spinning wheel, wet clay climbing between her fingers. Low-angle close-up, slow push-in, soft window light from the left. Sound: the wheel humming, light rain against the glass.
Short on credits? The generator opens an Insufficient Credits window with options, and the pricing page lists one-time credit packs as well as monthly and annual plans.

A note on images: they act as visual references that steer how the subject and setting look. Don't expect your upload to appear unchanged as the opening frame.
Tips for your first Kling 4.0 video
- Test small, then scale up. Run a short, lower-resolution take first and change one detail at a time until the motion and framing work. Then raise the length or resolution; the ✦ figure shows the new price before you commit.
- Pick the frame first. The model composes the scene for the ratio you choose, so set 9:16 for vertical feeds or 16:9 for widescreen before generating instead of cropping later.
- Keep it to one scene. A single location and one main action are easier to land than a chain of events. Add a second beat once the first take looks right.
- Say how it's filmed. Phrases like "locked-off wide shot," "slow dolly toward her face" or "handheld, following from behind" shape the result more than extra adjectives do.
- Give every reference a role. Write "the leather backpack in @image1 is the product; keep its stitching and buckles" instead of dropping in bare tags. If you remove a file, later files of the same type are renumbered, so update your tags.
- Fix upload warnings on the spot. Each file is checked when you pick it, and the message says what to change. Accepted formats are JPG, PNG, WebP, BMP, TIFF and GIF for images, MP4 and MOV for clips, and WAV and MP3 for audio; size and dimension limits are listed under file requirements.
Where your videos go
Most runs finish within a few minutes. Attached files upload when you press generate, so keep the tab open until "Generation started" appears; after that, you can leave. Every run, finished or failed, is listed in My Videos. The page opens with its filter set to Completed, so switch it to All to see runs that are still processing or have failed.
